Growth Status

The Pharaoh Vulture is named for the colorful striped feathers around it's head that mirror those of the Egyptian Pharaohs. While the pattern is serendipitous, the headdress is simply used as a means of courtship, with brighter and more lustrous feathers being favored. While other vultures usually arrive for the more tender portions of a carcass, the Pharaoh Vulture is one of the last, and has mirrored the sky-dropping tactics of some Earth birds to break open bones to get at the soft, nutritious marrow within. They nest on cliffs and lay only one or two eggs at a time, making obtaining them fairly difficult.
